How to Size an Awning: Projection, Drop, and Real Sun-and-Rain Coverage

An awning that looks great but is sized wrong won't do its job. Too little projection and the sun still hits your window; too little drop and low afternoon light slips right underneath. Sizing an awning correctly is about matching the structure to the opening, the exposure, and how the sun actually moves. Here's how to get it right.

The Three Measurements That Matter

• Projection — how far the awning extends out from the wall. This determines how much sun and rain it blocks.

• Drop — the vertical height of the awning face. More drop shades lower-angle morning and afternoon sun.

• Width — how far the awning spans across the opening, ideally extending a bit past each side of the window or door.

Match Projection to Sun Exposure

South-facing openings take high midday sun, so a moderate projection shades them well. East- and west-facing windows get low, direct morning and evening sun that reaches far under an awning, so they need more projection and drop to stay shaded. A quick sun study of your building points you to the right numbers.

Don't Forget Rain

Clearance and Code
